The Incas dominated the Andes for over a century during the Renaissance (1400 - 1533). When they settled in the region of Cuzco in the 13th century, ten civilisations had already been before them. The Incas are the heirs to sophisticated traditions developed over 3000 years.
Gold, considered to be the 'sweat' of the sun, supreme divinity of the Incan animist pantheon, is intrinsically connected to religious rites. The Incan emperor was the human incarnation of the sun and gold was also central in the representation of power. It was a social demarcation tool for the elite and an indispensable element of funeral collections. It is found in wide range of objects (crowns, tiaras, earrings, nose rings, etc). The use of silver, the metal associated with the lunar divinity, was also widespread throughout the Andes and high quality works are exhibited amongst the 253 works which have been lent by some of the most prestigious museums in Peru.
